DESCRIPTION

Following up on Greek 1, this course offers the student a more extensive foundation for an independent study of the original language of the New Testament and of early Christian, hellenistic-Jewish, and pagan sources of the same period. Students acquire the capacity to read koine Greek by studying the idiom of the NT and its grammar (self-study), by discussing the language and texts in class (on site or online), and by making, correcting, and discussing tests in translating and rehearsing. The course will lead to a more fundamental knowledge of morphology, syntax, and semantics in order to be able to translate more complex Greek clauses. We will read and discuss longer passages from the NT. Attention will also be given to differences between modern translations and interpretations of the NT. Students will also learn how to use a variety of academic aids for translating and interpreting NT texts, such as lexica, grammars, commentaries, NT journals, and Bible software.

Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
